Discover Za'atar Bake

If you’ve ever wandered down Cowley Road looking for something warm, fragrant, and genuinely satisfying, Za'atar Bake at 166 Cowley Rd, Oxford OX4 1UE, United Kingdom, is the kind of place that quietly wins you over. I first stepped in on a rainy Oxford afternoon, drawn by the smell of freshly baked flatbread and toasted sesame drifting out the door. Since then, it has become one of those spots I recommend without hesitation whenever friends ask for somewhere relaxed but memorable.

The menu leans heavily into Middle Eastern bakery traditions, and that’s where this place shines. Their signature manakish-soft, oven-baked flatbread topped with za’atar spice blend, olive oil, and sesame-arrives piping hot. The za’atar itself is a mix of wild thyme, sumac, and toasted sesame seeds. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), thyme and sesame are staples in Eastern Mediterranean diets, long associated with antioxidant properties and heart-healthy fats. You can taste that balance here: earthy, tangy, slightly nutty, and deeply comforting.

On one visit, I watched the baker stretch dough by hand behind the counter. There’s no conveyor-belt feel, no frozen shortcuts. The dough rests before baking, which gives it that airy interior and lightly crisp edge. That simple fermentation process, something the Culinary Institute of America often highlights as key to flavor development in bread, makes a real difference. You bite into it and there’s depth-not just heat from the oven, but a layered, developed taste.

Beyond the classic za’atar flatbread, the menu includes cheese-topped manakish, spiced lamb variations, and vegetarian-friendly options stacked with fresh vegetables and herbs. Their falafel wrap is another standout. Crispy on the outside, fluffy inside, and paired with tahini sauce that’s creamy without being heavy. Reviews from local diners frequently mention the freshness, and after multiple visits, I agree. The salads are bright, the parsley vibrant, and the pickles sharp enough to cut through richer toppings.

What makes this Oxford location particularly appealing is its casual, diner-style layout. You can pop in for a quick takeaway or sit by the window and people-watch along Cowley Road. It’s not pretentious, yet it feels intentional. Even the coffee-strong Arabic-style or a smooth latte-complements the bakery items rather than competing with them.

From a broader perspective, the rise of Middle Eastern bakeries across the UK reflects changing food trends. Data from the UK’s Office for National Statistics shows increasing consumer interest in global cuisines, particularly Mediterranean and Levantine flavors. Za’atar Bake fits neatly into that shift while staying authentic. It doesn’t dilute flavors for the sake of trendiness; it respects tradition.

In terms of service, the staff are approachable and patient, especially if you’re new to the cuisine. I once brought along a colleague who had never tried za’atar before. The server explained the spice blend clearly, describing the tang from sumac and the herbaceous base of thyme in simple terms. That clarity matters. Food becomes more enjoyable when you understand what you’re tasting.

Of course, no place is perfect. Seating can be limited during peak lunch hours, and because everything is baked fresh, popular items sometimes sell out. Still, I’d argue that’s part of its charm. Fresh production means you’re eating food made that day, not something reheated from yesterday.

The address-166 Cowley Rd-is easy to find, and its central Oxford setting makes it accessible whether you’re a student, a local resident, or just visiting. After several visits and plenty of taste tests across the menu, I can confidently say this isn’t just another takeaway. It’s a bakery rooted in tradition, backed by real culinary technique, and supported by consistently positive reviews from the community.

If you care about fresh bread, honest ingredients, and bold yet balanced flavors, this is one Cowley Road stop worth making part of your routine.

  • The restaurant is located on Crowley Road opposite to Tesco express. If you are driving, ample paid spaces are behind Tesco express. Not sure for Fridays and Saturdays evening. As soon as you enter, Middle Eastern music is playing and you are immediately transported to dunes of desert with aromas of good food. The kitchen is live. You can see your order coming through and going in the oven. Kababs were fabulous. I ordered chicken tangerine, which was rich in tanginess and lots of flavour. The breads are prepared hot. That’s the best complimenting part of eating hot food. Falafel were crisp and delicious. Definitely worth visiting and having genuine and tasty Middle Eastern delicacies. Kudos to the team for keeping things simple and yet flavourful.

  • I had the best Arabic breakfast I’ve ever tasted in Oxford. The restaurant is impeccably clean and tidy, with an inviting aroma that enhances the experience. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful, making the visit even more enjoyable. I highly recommend the Fool Medames it’s an excellent choice. A clean restroom is always a positive sign, and this restaurant didn’t disappoint. To top it off, the Arabic sweets were absolutely delicious. I wholeheartedly recommend this place to anyone who wants to experience authentic Arabic cuisine or a delightful breakfast.

  • We wanted to go out for breakfast but we're not in the mood for anything with eggs. So we went to Zaatar Bake for the first time and my goodness what a gem! We ordered the following items: falafel (came with tahini sauce, lettuce, pickles and freshly baked Arabic bread), fava beans (foul, which came with a speciality sauce and freshly baked bread), labaneh manaqeesh (fresh flatbread with a yogurt-based topping and olives), cheese fatayer (speciality dough mixed with black sesame seeds) and tea. Everything we ordered was absolutely scrumptious. The bread in particular is amazing on it's own, it's like little pillows of warmth. While they do have other meat-based and egg-based dishes, everything we we ordered was vegetarian or vegan, and we couldn't fault it. Definitely recommend.

  • What a great little find! Went there as a group of 7, all tried different things and genuinely enjoyed the food. The bread is scrumptious, I had lamb chilli in bread with vegetables and my god was it good! Kids really enjoyed the wings, also tried the house soup (lentil) as well as chicken shawarma and it was delicious. Food took longer than expected and there was a mother mix up which they promptly sorted, but other than that it was spot on Oh and the fresh baklawa looks delicious audio, bought some to takeaway as I was stuffed, but even though we live far away we'll definitely come again

  • We had a wonderful experience at this Middle Eastern restaurant while exploring Oxford. We tried the shawarma, kebbeh, lahmacun, and baba ghanoush, and everything was yummy, fresh, and prepared incredibly fast. You could really taste the quality and care in the food. The staff were very welcoming and friendly, which made the visit even better. I went with my son, and we both enjoyed it so much. We highly recommend this place to anyone looking for delicious, authentic Middle Eastern food in Oxford. Shukran guys
